Jumpstart Your 2017 – Happy New Year!

Happy New year!

Every now and again we all go through days, weeks , even months of feeling so demotivated and uninspired when it comes to exercise. The holiday season does not help either as we are surrounded by good food and even better company, so it’s quite natural to slack in healthy choices in food and exercise.

I go through phases of eating clean and exercising and somehow I manage to keep my food under control then something just goes off in my brain and I am off eating anything and everything. And exercise…what exercise? and that’s when I usually need to dig deep or deeper.

Getting back in the groove of things is usually quite scary, just the thought can make even the most determined person begin to procrastinate. The most important thing to note is that it is achievable, just get up and start.

  1. Start – Even if it is just a 5 minute walk, just start and do that walk everyday. You will be amazed at how much you will want to add another 5 minutes and maybe a jog. Slowly by slowly you will get back into the groove of things.
  2. Be patient – One of the reasons we all slip back into our not so healthy lifestyles is because as soon as we put a salad in our mouth we expect to see abs coming through. Truth be told that is not the case and changes come slower than we anticipated. Just put in the time and slowly but surely you will feel, and eventually see the results both in your general well being and physical looks.
  3. Switch things up – It is easy to get bored doing the same workouts everyday. Try out different classes in your local gym or get out of the gym and do some outdoor workouts in the clean fresh air outside. Parks are great for outdoor exercises.
  4. Find a workout buddy – Having someone to hold you accountable and to push you when you are feeling lazy is key if you tend to slip back easily. Also it makes it more fun to have that friend, boyfriend, girlfriend, sister, partner or whoever, who you can share that part of your life with and grow together in a positive way.
  5. Eat more nutritious foods – It may sound cliche but your body craves what you give it. The more nutritious food you feed it the more you will crave less of the processed foods. And this leads to results and keeps you motivated.. see?
  6. Stock your pantry with nutritious food – The more healthy food you have readily at home, the less likely you will reach out for the less nutritious foods and snacks. Stock up on beans, lentils, quinoa, brown rice, and you will fall into the habit of cooking them instead of ordering in.

Now, you don’t have to go to the gym, there are loads of at home workouts and workout videos that can help you keep active. We will talk about those in another post.

Whatever you do just move, the rest will surely fall into place in the long run.

What workouts do you like to do when you are feeling demotivated?
